Lions drop SAC home opener versus Newberry

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-6, 0-2 SAC) was defeated by a score of 69-42 to visiting Newberry (4-3, 1-1 SAC) Saturday afternoon.
Tied at four with 4:09 played in the first quarter, Newberry's Courtney Virgo's three-pointer spurred the Wolves on to score eight straight points, taking a 12-4 lead with under five minutes to play in the opening frame. For the remainder of the quarter, the teams each scored four points. Virgo led all players with six points in the stanza.
Newberry maintained their double-digit lead for a majority of the second quarter, leading by as many as 15 with just over a minute remaining in the half. A Fajhenee Bradford jumper in the waning seconds cut the deficit to 13 points as the Lions entered halftime trailing 31-18 after 20 minutes of play.
The third quarter saw the lowest scoring output with both teams combining for 20 points. Both Ericka Wiseley and Tatum Boggs led their respective teams with four points apiece. To open the final frame, the Wolves went on a 9-3 run to hold a 23-point lead with under seven minutes to play. With under five minutes to play, Newberry once again strung together a lengthy run, 10-0, to expand upon their lead.
Talia Roberts led all players with 15 points followed by Keli Ramos and Virgo, with 12 and 11 points, apiece. De'Ja Marshall led the Lions with 11 points while Bradford added eight. Both Boggs and Gabby Gianikos ended the contest with seven points apiece.
The Lions take to the road on Monday, December 2 to take on Bluefield State. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
