Marshall nets 19 versus Wingate at home

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-11, 1-11 SAC) was downed by visiting Wingate (6-8, 6-7 SAC) by a score of 97-67 Saturday afternoon inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs opened the contest on an 8-0 run, eventually building their lead to 10-3 before the Lions responded with a 5-0 run to pull within two, capped off by a three-pointer from Drew McMillan. Wingate pulled away to close out the first quarter, ending on a 12-2 run to go up 22-10 entering the second frame.
Wingate carried their momentum over into the second, outscoring the Lions 22-15 and shooting just over 41 percent from the floor. Both Bryanna Troutman and Hannah Chandler led their respective teams with eight points apiece in the quarter. The Bulldogs entered the half up 44-25 after 20 minutes of play.
Entering the final frame, the Lions battled tough, matching Wingate's output in the fourth with 29 points. De'Ja Marshall collected 15 of her team-high 19 points in the final 10 minutes of play while McMillan added five.
The Bulldogs hit 10 three-pointers on the night and pulled down 49 rebounds to the Lions' 32. Troutman led all players with 20 points and 16 rebounds for the double-double. Jaia Wilson excelled, adding 17 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.
McMillan led the team with eight rebounds followed by Marshall's seven. Both Chandler and Gabby Gianikos scored 11 points while the Gianikos picked up seven assists.
The Lions roll on, facing Lenoir-Rhyne on Monday, February 8 at home. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
