MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (12-11, 6-6 SAC) capped off a massive comeback win in the fourth quarter, defeating Carson-Newman (15-7, 9-5 SAC) by a score of 67-65 Wednesday evening.
Mars Hill outscored the Eagles 25-9 in the final 10 minutes of play. Aaliyah El led the team with 12 points, going 5-of-6 from the floor and hitting the buzzer-beating layup with the game tied at 65 to send the Lions to their fourth straight game, sweeping their homestand.
The first quarter saw the Eagles lead 23-16 at the end of the first 10 minutes. Braelyn Wykle led all players with eight points. The duo of Maddie Gillie and Jaquoria Rucker led the Lions with five points apiece.
Lindsey Taylor led all players with eight points in the second frame as the Eagles went into the half with a 40-28 lead. Tateyoina Harris led the Lions with five points while Gillie pulled down three rebounds.
In a closer contested third, Carson-Newman outscored the Lions 16-14 as Taylor once again led all players with 10 points. Harris once again led the Lions with five points followed by three from Gillie.
The Lions outshot Carson-Newman 41 percent to 35 percent and pulled down eight more rebounds, totalling 48 on the night. The trio of Harris, Gillie, and El each recorded 16 points in the victory.
Mars Hill looks to roll the momentum over to Harrogate, Tennessee on Saturday, February 10 when they face Lincoln Memorial on the road. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
