Final second free position pushes Wildcats passed Mars Hill
The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (2-2) was defeated in the final seconds of play Monday night to Wilmington (1-3) in non-conference play inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium by a score of 13-12.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (2-2) was defeated in the final seconds of play Monday night to Wilmington (1-3) in non-conference play inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium by a score of 13-12.
The Lions led 11-9 with just over eight minutes remaining before three straight Wildcats' goals provided Wilmington the 12-11 lead with 5:26 left in the contest. Wilmington goals were scored by Taylor Lambeth, Maris Allen and Brooke Siebert, with the latter two coming off of free position attempts.
Mars Hill's Kiersten Foust tied the game at 11 with under four minutes remaining with an incredible individual effort to snipe the ball passed Tori Grubowski for her fourth goal of the contest.
With three seconds left on the clock, a foul was called, giving Wilmington's Delaney Steele a free position opportunity. Shooting low, Steele's fourth goal of the game proved to be the game-winning marker for Wilmington.
The teams opened the contest by trading goals back and forth until a three-goal Wilmington run gave the Wildcats a 5-2 advantage with under 15 minutes left in the first half. Steele recorded two goals in the run.
Mars Hill answered back with three straight of their own with goals scored by Molly Tobias, Foust, and Scout Black with her first of the year. Steele and Tobias traded goals in the final 8:34, sending both teams into the half tied at six.
Wilmington's Lambeth scored the first goal of the second half, but four straight Lions' goals gave Mars Hill the 10-7 edge with just under 17 minutes to play. The Wildcats pulled within one when Siebert and Allen scored 1:53 apart, however, Tobias' free position marker, her hat-trick tally, reestablished Mars Hill's two-goal advantage.
Steele led all players with six points (4g, 2a) followed by Allen and Siebert's four points, each recording three goals and one assist. Foust led the Lions with four goals while Black recorded a hat-trick and collected an assist for the four-point outing.
Grubowski made seven saves to pick up her first win of the season. Alexa Holleran stopped 13 shots in the loss.
Mars Hill returns to the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium on Thursday, March 7th when they take on Ashland. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
