Lions drop conference opener versus Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (3-5, 0-1 SAC) was defeated by Wingate (3-5, 1-0 SAC) by a score of 21-5 in their South Atlantic Conference opening contest Saturday afternoon.
With 14:24 left in the first half and the Lions down by one, Wingate reeled off nine straight goals to close out the half to take a 14-3 lead after 30 minutes of play. Morgan Akers recorded a hat-trick in the run while Megan Amrein scored twice and assisted on Katie Bryson's goal with under four minutes left in the half.
The Bulldogs carried over the momentum in the second half, scoring seven straight to hold a 21-3 lead with 7:07 left in the contest. Mars Hill struck twice in the final 4:58 with goals from Victoria Eckard and Maria Fabrizio.
Mars Hill struck first in the contest with Kiersten Foust scoring 2:51 into the game. Two Bulldogs' goals 59 seconds apart provided Wingate their first lead of the contest before Rebecca Dallman's tally tied the game at two. Following two more Wingate goals, Foust netted her second of the game to pull within one with 16:37 left in the first half.
Amrein and Becca Ruiz each recorded two goals and two assists to lead all players with four points on the day. Akers and Kendall Wells netted hat-tricks. Foust (2g) and Eckard (1g, 1a) led the Lions with two points apiece.
Arion Pierre picked up the win for Wingate, making four saves in 30 minutes of play. Gini Joy was credited with the loss, allowing 14 goals on 18 shots.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, March 20th with another SAC contest versus Lincoln Memorial. The contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
