Lions defeat Newberry in season finale on Senior Day
The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (5-10, 2-6 SAC) closed out the 2019 season with a 20-11 win over Newberry (3-14, 0-8 SAC) Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (5-10, 2-6 SAC) closed out the 2019 season with a 20-11 win over Newberry (3-14, 0-8 SAC) Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
After giving up the first two goals of the game, Mars Hill's Victoria Eckard recorded the natural hat-trick to give the Lions a 3-2 lead with 19:04 left in the first half. Chloe Wood's second of the half tied the game at three. With 16:35 remaining, the Lions began a 6-0 run to close out the half, leading 9-3 after 30 minutes of play. Molly Tobias scored twice while Eckard collected four assists.
Kiersten Foust opened the scoring for the Lions in the second half by scoring two goals in the first 1:50 of the half. She would go on to score six goals in the half. Goals from Wood and Rachel Dillon pulled Newberry within six, the closest the Wolves would come for the remainder of the contest, with 22:07 left.
The Lions closed out the contest by scoring the final two goals of the game. Carissa Watson netted her first of the season with over six minutes remaining while Scout Black recorded her second marker of the game and 35th goal of her career in her final game.
Wood led the Wolves with seven points (6g, 1a). Eckard led all players with nine points (3g, 6a) followed by Foust's eight (6g, 2a). Gini Joy picked up the win, making 5 saves in just shy of 45 minutes played.
Prior to the start of the contest, the Lions recognized Elise Podsiad, Mariah Johnson, Adasia Bradshaw and Scout Black as part of their Senior Day celebrations.
