Women's Soccer Loses to Eagles
Carson-Newman defeated the Lions 6-1 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Wednesday night.
MARS HILL, N.C. – Carson-Newman defeated the Lions 6-1 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill fell to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the league. The Eagles improved to 5-1 on the year, 3-0 in the SAC.
Julianne Herrity scored the first goal in the match at the 16:08 mark on a cross from Holly Talbut-Smith. Varin Ness recorded the second goal of the contest just over a minute later (17:20) on an unassisted breakaway. Camilla Olsson tallied the Eagles third goal scoring from 15 yards out off a pass from Heida Ragney in the 22nd minute. A breakaway goal Varin Ness at the 37:25 mark ended the scoring in the first half. Ness' goal was unassisted.
Gabrielle Gianeselli scored the Eagles fifth goal in the 75th minute. The goal was unassisted.
Two minutes later (76:15), Breona Tate scored the Lions' goal. She intercepted a pass from the Eagles defense and beat the keeper from the right side. The goal was unassisted.
Mikayla Gregg added the last goal of the match for the Eagles making the final tally 6-1 in favor of the visitors. Gabriela Dias sent in the pass that led to Gregg's goal.
Carson-Newman outshot the Lions 32-14 in the match. The Eagles had five corner kicks while the Lions recorded two in the contest. Maslyn Greene played the first 67:26 in goal for the Lions and made nine saves. Shelby Savolainen played the final 22:34 in the net for the Lions and made three saves. Jessica Fraiture played the initial 74:35 in goal for Carson-Newman and made four saves. Katie Cottrell played the last 15:25 in goal for the Eagles and made five saves.
Mars Hill will host SAC rival Brevard on Friday, September 25. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
