MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions fell to Catawba, 5-0 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill took their season record to 0-4 overall, 0-2 in the league. The Catawba Indians improved to 2-1-1 on the season and 2-0 in the SAC.
Shelby Vasich scored off a throw-in less than a minute into the action (00:57) to give the Indians an early lead. Anna Sidders provided the assist on the goal.
Bailey Howell scored off a quick touch from Hannah cruise in the 16th minute to put Catawba up 2-0. Eleven minutes later (26:44), Howell added her second goal of the match on an unassisted breakaway.
Caitlin Hill gave the Indians a 3-0 advantage in the 30th minute scoring off a long pass from Gidny Jonsdottir. Kiersten Peck kicked in her own rebound in the 45th minute. Peck's corner kick hit the near post and was deflected straight back to Peck as she entered the field. Peck quickly sent the ball in for the score. The second half would not see any additional scoring.
Catawba outshot the Lions, 22-11. Catawba edged the Lions in corner kicks, 3-1. The Indians were called offsides once. Maslyn Greene played all 90 minutes in goal for Mars Hill and made five saves. Shelby Thompson also played the entire match in the net for Catawba and made six saves.
Mars Hill will play at SAC rival Carson-Newman on Wednesday, September 21. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
