CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (1-5, 0-1 SAC) opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 4-0 loss to Wingate (3-1-1, 1-0 SAC) on the road Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs struck in the first half in the 22nd minute where Dayna Marshall scored her third goal of the season, tapping home a feed from Gabby Fleischli. Aside from the goal given up, Tonje Jorgensen made three stops on the four shots she saw in the opening 45 minutes.
Wingate, who attempted 10 shots in the first half, doubled their mark in the second, attempting 20 in the frame with only six making their way towards Clare Witt. A consistent pressure from the Bulldogs offense put up three more goals in the second half. Markers from Alicia Rubio Garcia, Kristen DeBiase and Colleen Zickert ballooned the lead to 4-0 with just over 17 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Lions were held without a shot until the 78th minute when Natasha Castellano forced Abbey Frail to make her first save of the contest. With under three minutes remaining, Juanita Guzman forced a shot on goal for the Lions second and final shot of the contest.
Jorgensen, who suffered her first loss of her college career, and Clare Witt both made three saves in the contest.
Mars Hill returns to action on Wednesday, September 19 in another SAC meeting when they take on Lenoir-Rhyne.
