Volleyball Sweeps Queens
The Mars Hill volleyball team ended a three match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over Queens in Curry Arena on Saturday afternoon, winning by scores of 26-24, 28-26 and 27-25.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team ended a three match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over Queens in Curry Arena on Saturday afternoon winning by scores of 26-24, 28-26 and 27-25. Mars Hill improved to 8-16 overall and 7-10 in the South Atlantic Conference while Queens is 6-19 and 3-14 in league play.
Rebecca Butler led the Lion offense with 14 kills, followed by 13 kills from Mary Kate Griffin. Victoria Kaiser led the way from the service line with two aces, with Griffin, Lauren Hochstetler and Andie Russell recording one ace each. Defensively, Butler led the way with 23 digs, with Griffin and Christen Nicholson finishing with 19 and 10 digs respectively.
Rebecca Cochran led Queens with nine kills, with Alex Thompson recording a match-high three aces. Megan Mancini led the Royals with 22 digs, followed by Katie Schoenrock with 14, Rebecca Cochran with 12 and Sydney Kunz with 11.
In the first set, Mars Hill broke a 21-21 tie with two of the next three points and held a 24-22 lead before Queens rallied to tie the set at 24. A Hochstetler kill and Kaiser ace ended the set for the Lions.
Mars Hill held a 22-15 lead in the second set before Queens scored eight of the next nine points to tie the set at 23. The Royals held a 26-25 lead before an error, a Butler kill and Kaiser's second set-ending ace finished off the hosts by a score of 28-26.
With the Lions ahead 19-13 in the third set, Queens went on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 20. Neither team led by more than two points before an attack error by each squad tied the set at 25. A Queens attack error gave Mars Hill a 26-25 advantage before a Hochstetler kill closed out the match and the season sweep.
Mars Hill travels to Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup.
