Mike Smith named Head Volleyball Coach
The Mars Hill Athletic Department has promoted Michael Smith to head volleyball coach, as announced by Director of Athletics, Rick Baker. Smith has served as interim head volleyball coach since February.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill Athletic Department has promoted Michael Smith to head volleyball coach, as announced by Director of Athletics, Rick Baker. Smith will begin his duties immediately. Smith has served as interim head volleyball coach since February.
Baker stated, "Mike's years of experience and resume as a volleyball coach speak for themselves. He did a great job coaching our team through the spring and we are excited Mike is joining the Mars Hill University family. He is a great addition to our coaching staff."
Smith led the team to their fourth straight South Atlantic Conference tournament appearance, earning the No. 5 seed in the SAC tournament. He coached senior libero Ully Martins to an All-SAC First Team selection and junior middle hitter Jana Cuk to an All-SAC Second Team selection.
"I would like to thank President Floyd and Director of Athletics Rick Baker for this opportunity," Smith said. "I have been surrounded by lots of support from everyone on campus and in the community during my short time at Mars Hill University and am looking forward to the future."
He began coaching the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial in 1994 and over 17 years, amassed a record of 351-215 for a .620 winning percentage. He compiled 13 seasons with 20-plus wins including two seasons with 19 wins. He led the Railsplitters to the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament from 2008-2010 and was ranked within the region during those years.
Smith has coached 16 All-Conference players between the Gulf South Conference and SAC including four All-Region, three players named NCAA Southeast Regional All-Tournament team, and seven players inducted into the LMU Athletes Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 2019.
Smith added, "The volleyball players have been so strong and resilient during this difficult period and I am looking forward to working with them more in the future and watching their continued growth. My wife and I are excited to be part of the Mars Hill community."
