Athletic Highlights: September 10 – September 17, 2018
Football: The Mars Hill football team was defeated in their conference opening contest against Lenoir-Rhyne on Thursday afternoon by a score of 59-27. Craig Rucker scored twice—one rushing, one receiving TD—and had 10 receptions for 132 yards. James Urzua threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Clarenton Cowart and Jaqueveon Watkins each scored as well, both being their first collegiate touchdowns. Carl Robertgeau had a team-high 15 tackles.
Men's Soccer: Mars Hill was defeated 2-0 by the defending conference champion Wingate Bulldogs Wednesday evening. Adnan Saltagic had the lone shot on goal and Brian Salzman made one save in the contest.
Women's Soccer: The Lions traveled to Charlotte to open up South Atlantic Conference play versus Wingate and were defeated by a score of 4-0, only registering two shots in the contest. Goalkeepers Tonje Jorgensen and Clare Witt each made three saves.
Men's Golf: Mars Hill opened their 2018 season with a fourteenth place finish at the Coker Fall Preview. Stephen Thomasson was the top finisher for the Lions, placing 36th overall with a score of +9 over the two days.
Volleyball: The Lions coasted past Newberry in SAC play on Tuesday evening, taking down the Wolves in three sets. The win marks their fourth straight, winning 12 sets in a row. Sally Anne Johnson led all players with 11 kills and hit .476 on the night while adding five blocks. Sara Pasour had 14 digs, 14 assists and two aces.
