Athletic Highlights: October 1 – October 8, 2018
Football: The Mars Hill football team lost 31-28 to Tusculum on Saturday afternoon at homecoming. Austin Brown threw for 226 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for 91 yards. Jaqueveon Watkins, Christopher Roberts and Craig Rucker each had one rushing touchdown. Chris Ferdinand and Jaden King each had 11 tackles.
Men's Soccer: The Lions went 0-2 this past week, falling 2-0 to Lincoln Memorial and 6-1 on the road to Coker. Sebastian Bertilsson had the lone goal for Mars Hill, his fifth of the season.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill went 1-1, suffering a 5-0 loss to Lincoln Memorial, but responding with a thrilling 2-1 win over Coker. In the final two minutes of the game, Sanne Martinsen scored twice in 25 seconds for her fifth and sixth goals of the season.
Men's Tennis: The Lions went 1-1 this past week, earning a 6-1 win over Montreat, but falling 5-2 to King. They improve to 3-2 overall.
Women's Tennis: The Lions remained undefeated, picking up another two wins, a 7-0 result over Montreat and 5-2 win over King.
Men's Swimming: Mars Hill opened their season with a 154.50-107.50 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne. Erwin Ortiz won three individual events and was part of the winning 200 yard freestyle relay team, along with Illya Buryak, Elijah Sears and Vitor Goncalves. Ortiz took first in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:10.41, the 100 yard butterfly in 53.23 and the 500 yard freestyle in 4:49.69.
Women's Swimming: Mars Hill picked up two wins over Lenoir-Rhyne and Pfeiffer by scores of 149-113 and 217-32, respectively. Kathryn Boland won three individual events and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team with Haley Horton, Brianna Broussard and Elena Massa-Teijeiro. Boland took the 50 yard breaststroke in 31.72 and the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.56. She also set a school record in the 100 yard IM with a mark of 1:01.85.
Men's Golf: The Mars Hill A-Team placed 8th at the North Georgia Invitational. Xisco Llinas was the top finishing Lion.
Volleyball: Mars Hill won both matches this past week, and their sixth straight with a four set win over Newberry and sweep over Carson-Newman. The Lions sit third in the SAC with a record 7-2, 13-4 overall.
