Athletic Highlights: October 8 – October 15, 2018
Football: The Mars Hill football team was defeated by Carson-Newman, 49-27, on the road Saturday evening. Craig Rucker scored four touchdowns (two receiving, two rushing) on the day and had 209 yards receiving. Austin Brown threw for 220 yards and one touchdown. Tray Smith had a team-high nine tackles and Carl Robertgeau had one interception. Rucker leads the SAC in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Rucker is ranked third in the nation in receiving touchdowns and first in receiving yards. Austin Brown is third in the league in yards per game (223.1) and third in the SAC in touchdowns; Brown leads the SAC in completions.
Men's Soccer: The Lions went 1-0-1 this week, drawing with Newberry on Wednesday night, but picking up a 2-1 win over Shaw in non-conference play Saturday afternoon. Adnan Saltagic was the lone goal scorer for Mars Hill against the Wolves, while Sebastian Bertilsson and Oscar Mitchell scored in the win over Shaw.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill were defeated in overtime against Catawba Wednesday evening by a score of 1-0. Tonje Jorgensen had eight saves in the contest while Sanne Martinsen and Elise Podsiad recorded shots on goal.
Men's Tennis: The Lions match against Milligan was canceled and rescheduled for Wednesday, October 24th at 1 p.m. on the road.
Women's Tennis: The Lions remained undefeated, downing Milligan by a score of 5-2. Mars Hill currently sits at 6-0 on the season.
Men's Cross Country: The Mars Hill men's cross country team placed 25th overall at the Royals Cross Country Challenge held Friday afternoon. Nick Resor was the top finisher for the Lions, turning in a time of 26:01. Jared Stanley followed close behind with a mark of 26:11.
Women's Cross Country: The Mars Hill women's cross country team finished 34th out of 45 teams at the Royals Cross Country Challenge held on Friday afternoon. Nyla Feeney turned in a time of 19:11 to be the Lions' top finisher. Kylee Peck ran a time of 21:12 to be next fastest runner for the team.
Volleyball: Mars Hill split their two matches played this past week, sweeping Coker and falling in a thrilling five-set battle with undefeated Wingate. After taking the first two sets, the Lions were unable to hand the Bulldogs their first loss of the season as Wingate rallied to take the next three sets. Sally Anne Johnson had 20 kills, hit .295 and had 15 blocks over the two games.
