Athletic Highlights: October 15 – October 22, 2018
Football: The Mars Hill football team fell 58-21 to Wingate on Saturday evening. Christopher Roberts rushed for 54 yards on 14 carries and one score. Austin Brown threw for 141 yards completing 14-23 passes. Craig Rucker caught seven passes for 98 yards while Clarenton Cowart had 47 yards receiving on three catches and one touchdown. Carl Robertgeau had a game-high 12 tackles.
Men's Soccer: The Lions went 0-1-1 this week, drawing with Carson-Newman on Wednesday night by a score of 1-1 and falling on the road to Tusculum, 2-0, on Saturday evening. Matthew Jackson had the lone goal for the Lions. Brian Salzman made 17 saves over the two contests.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill went 1-1-0 this week, falling 4-1 to Carson-Newman, but winning a double overtime thriller against Tusculum by a score of 2-1. Kanani Thomas scored the lone goal against the Eagles. Sanne Martinsen recorded her seventh goal of the campaign to force the game into overtime. Paige Thompson, with her first of the year, won the contest for the Lions 3:14 into the final frame.
Men's Tennis: The Lions swept Johnson C. Smith, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon to improve to 4-2 on the year.
Men's Golf: The Lions placed seventh at the Donal Ross Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. The Lions shot a combined 877 through three rounds, finishing tied with Mount Olive for the seventh spot. Nicholas Boone placed sixth overall, shooting even par.
Men's Cross Country: The Mars Hill men's cross country team placed fourth overall at the Lenoir-Rhyne Classic held on Friday afternoon. Nick Resor was the top finisher for the Lions, placing 13th overall with a time of 26:46.02. Jared Stanley finished 19th, turning in a time of 27:18.68.
Women's Cross Country: The Mars Hill women's cross country team placed third overall at the Lenoir-Rhyne Classic held Friday afternoon. Nyla Feeney placed third overall, turning in a time of 23:29.03, a new personal best by 36 seconds. Sydney Britt placed 15th overall with a time of 26:36.65.
Men's Swimming: The Mars Hill men's swim team defeated Lees-McRae Saturday afternoon by a score of 157-77. Erwin Ortiz won three individual events and was a member of the winning 200 yard medley relay team along with Harrison Butler, Elijah Sears and Vitor Goncalves. Ortiz took first in the 100, 200 and 500 yard freestyle events.
Women's Swimming: The Mars Hill women's swim team defeated Lees-McRae Saturday afternoon by a score of 172-39. Kathryn Boland won three individual events which included the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke as well as the 200 yard IM. She, along with Savannah Maddox, Haley Horton and Ashley Hicks, also won the 200 yard medley relay.
Volleyball: Mars Hill dropped all three games this week, by scores of 3-0 to Lenoir-Rhyne, Queens and Catawba. Sally Anne Johnson, against Catawba, established a new career-high in kills and versus Lenoir-Rhyne, Elizabeth Kaeser recorded her 100th career ace.
