MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (16-24) was defeated by Winston-Salem State (26-12) by a score of 6-5 Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field in non-conference play.
Entering the ninth inning down 6-0, Mars Hill rallied to score five runs and put the Rams on their heels. Adam Plouffe opened the scoring with a RBI single that allowed Jordan Lathe to break the shutout bid. With two runners on later in the frame, a two-run double by Austin Treadway cut the Winston-Salem State lead in half. Treadway later scored off of an Austin Purser RBI single for Mars Hill's fourth run of the frame. Paul Martin drove Purser home with a double to right center field. With two outs in the inning, the Rams were able to force a strikeout and escape with the 6-5 win.
The Rams struck in the first inning as Nick Williams drove Tyler Daniels home with a RBI double down the left field line. In the top of the fifth, Nick Tiller's two-run home run extended the Winston-Salem State lead to three runs.
Cole Parks and Williams added solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to go up by five. Luke Spiva extended the lead to six with a RBI single in the top of the eighth.
Spiva led all players with three hits in the contest while Tiller and Williams added two RBI. Martin had two hits to lead the Lions while Treadway added two RBI.
Prior to the start of Saturday's contest, seven seniors were honored on Senior Day. Luke Baker, Mike Rammuno, Daniel Vitello, Gray McCurry, Troy Hall, Matt Honeycutt and Brad Dzeskewicz were all recognized for their commitment and contributions to the baseball program prior to first pitch.
The Lions return to Henderson Field on Sunday, April 14th to wrap up their three-game series with the Rams. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
