Mars Hill opens 2020 season with DH versus FMU, SWU
The Mars Hill baseball team (0-2) opened the 2020 season, falling to Francis Marion (1-0) by a score of 10-0 and to Southern Wesleyan (1-1) by a score of 6-1.
FLORENCE, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (0-2) opened the 2020 season, falling to Francis Marion (1-0) by a score of 10-0 and to Southern Wesleyan (1-1) by a score of 6-1.
GAME ONE: FMU 10, MHU 0
Following a wild pitch in the second inning to put the Patriots up 1-0, a sacrifice fly from Vince Hanna doubled the lead. Another sacrifice fly in the fourth inning put Francis Marion up 3-0 heading into the fifth inning.
The Patriots added five runs in the fifth, highlighted by two two-run singles. Grayson Cottingham drove home two runs with a single to center field and later scored off of a Sam Stonskas single into right field.
Francis Marion added two runs in the seventh to cap off their season opener.
Scottie Lee recorded two of the Lions three hits while Jordan Lathe recorded the lone Lions' double in the game.
Josh Bobrowski struck out 12 in the win.
GAME TWO: SWU 6, MHU 1
Following a scoreless six innings, the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh. Tanner Glass' RBI double plated the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Kole Rogers plated two with a single, putting the Warriors up 3-0 entering the eighth.
Glass collected his second RBI of the contest with his second double of the game in the penultimate inning. Devin Patrick extended the Warriors' lead to six with a two-run double that plated Bryson Fowler and Glass.
Ruben Trillo broke the shutout bid with a sacrifice fly that plated Jordan Lathe in the top of the ninth.
Cody Cline led the Lions with two hits in the contest while the duo of Glass and Parker Pillsbury each recorded two hits for the Warriors.
AJ Chacon struck out seven in his Mars Hill debut while Jarred Jones, in eight innings pitched, struck out 14 for the win.
The Lions return to action on Sunday, February 2 when they take on Lenoir-Rhyne. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
