Harris named to Don Hansen All-America team
Cabral, Randolph tabbed honorable mention All-Americans
PITTSBURG, Kan. - Mars Hill's Maurice Harris has been named to the 2010 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America second team defense. Linebacker Rudy Cabral and running back Jonas Randolph were named honorable mention All-Americans.
All three individuals were All-Super Region Two first team selections.
Harris was also named to the 2010 Associated Press Little All-America Football third team, Daktronics All-America second team, and Daktronics All-Southeast Region and All-South Atlantic Conference first teams. He led the league with 11 sacks.
Cabral led the conference with 104 total tackles in 2010. He was also named to the Daktronics Super Region II and All-South Atlantic Conference first teams.
Randolph earns All-American recognition for a second consecutive
season by the publication after being voted to the second team
offense in 2009. He was also named to the 2010 American Football
Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches'
All-America Team and Daktronics All-Southeast Region and All-South
Atlantic Conference first teams. Randolph led the league in rushing
for two consecutive seasons. Through three seasons, he has 37
touchdowns, 3,438 rushing yards and 222 points scored, all school
career records.
Harlon Hill Trophy winning quarterback Eric Czerniewski of Central Missouri garnered Don Hansen Offensive Player of the Year accolades. Gene Upshaw Award runner-up defensive end Marc Schiechl of Colorado Mines received Don Hansen National Defensive Player of the Year honors. Angelo State return specialist Garrett Tidwell, who returned three kicks for scores and ranked in the top 10 nationally in both punt returns and kickoff returns, was selected the Don Hansen National Special Teams Player of the Year.
Bloomsburg running back Franklyn Quiteh, who led Division II in rushing with 2,015 yards and 22 touchdowns, and Pittsburg State linebacker Nate Dreiling, who led the division in tackles (160, 13.3 pg), shared Don Hansen National Freshman of the Year honors.
Minnesota Duluth's Bob Nielson, who led the Bulldogs to an unblemished 15-0 record and the school's second NCAA Division II National Championship in three years, shared Don Hansen National Coach of the Year honors with Mercyhurst's Marty Schaetzle, who led one of the division's most compelling turnarounds in 2010 with a 10-3 record and an NCAA-II second-round playoff appearance after a 4-7 campaign in 2009.
The Don Hansen Division II All-America Team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.
The Don Hansen Football Committee selected All-Super Region teams in December and early January, with the first team and second-team All-Super Region players advancing to the national ballot. A total of 167 players earned some form of Don Hansen All-America honors. Players from 77 of the 150 football-playing schools in Division II earned Don Hansen All-America accolades. National Champion Minnesota Duluth and national semifinalist NW Missouri State led the way by placing nine players apiece on All-America squad.
