Mars Hill defeated SAC rival Brevard 27-7 in South Atlantic Conference football action to end regular season play and secure a second place finish in the league standings
BREVARD, N.C. – Mars Hill defeated SAC rival Brevard 27-7 in South Atlantic Conference football action to end regular season play and secure a second place finish in the league standings. The Lions were picked to finished sixth in the preseason coaches' poll. Mars Hill ends the regular season 6-5 overall and 5-2 in the SAC. Brevard fell to 0-11 on the year, 0-7 in the league.
Shaikel Davis rushed for 162 yards on 22 carries and one score. Jamel Harbison ran for 92 yards on nine carries and one touchdown. Gilbert Johnson caught four passes for 46 yards one touchdown reception. Matt Layman was 7-18 for 81 yards passing. Johnny Maxey had a game high 12 tackles, a sack, a tackle-for-loss and a fumble recovery. Chris Daniels posted eight tackles and a pass break-up while Chris Moseley had a fumble recovery he returned for a score.
Anthony Washington led Brevard with 91 yards rushing on 19 carries. T.J. Lett had one reception for a 32-yard touchdown play. Jason Nieradka led the Tornados with eight stops while Ty'Reik Faulks tallied seven tackles including two for loss.
Harbison put the Lions on the board (7-0) with 7:45 left in the first quarter on a 1-yard dive. Layman hit Johnson on a 13-yard touchdown strike with 13:27 left in the second quarter. Dylan Barnas PAT kick was blocked and the Lions led 13-0. The teams carried that score into the locker rooms at halftime.
Moseley picked up a Tornado fumble with 11:07 left in the third stanza and returned it 11 yards to give the Lions a 20-0 advantage. Lett accounted for Brevard's only touchdown in the contest with 8:49 left in the fourth quarter (20-7). Davis found the endzone from six yards out with 6:31 left in regulation to seal the win for the Lions.
At the conclusion of the Lions' 11 regular season games, Davis ends the 2015 campaign with 951 rushing yards. Keshaun Taylor recorded 1,120 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in the air and one off a kickoff return. Johnson tallied 826 receiving yards, also with nine TD receptions. Layman threw for 1,782 yards and 14 touchdown strikes. Trey Clark accumulated 97 tackles followed by Maxey with 82. Moseley ends his freshman campaign with three interceptions and one fumble recovery.
