Men's Basketball Drops Exhibition at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – Mars Hill's men's basketball team lost an exhibition game at Longwood University at Willett Hall, 88-70. Isaiah Cuthbertson recorded a double-double in the loss with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
Carter Wright followed with 19 points while Devonte Williams added 11 points, eight boards and the same number of assists. Thomas Anderson rounded out the double-digit scorers for MHU with 10.
Five players scored in double-figures for Longwood led by Tristan Carey with 17. Lucas Woodhouse followed with 16 while Leron Fisher added 14. Karl Ziegler and Darrion Allen recorded 12 points apiece.
Longwood shot the ball well hitting 55.4% (36-65) of their shots while MHU connected on only 35.4% (23-65) of their attempts. MHU won the rebound battle, 46-31. Twenty-two turnovers plagued the Lions as those miscues directly led to 30 points for the Lancers. The game saw seven ties and six lead changes.
Neither team could hold on to the lead until a high percentage shot by Carey gave the Lancers a 26-24 advantage at the 7:10 mark of the first frame. Longwood would push their lead to 12 points at the 1:44 mark after Jeff Havenstein hit a pair of foul shots. The Lions scored four unanswered points to send the teams into the locker room at the intermission with the hosts leading, 46-38.
Longwood scored the first 12 points of the second frame to put the game away. A dunk by Damarion Geter with 16:01 left in the second half gave the Lancers a 20-point lead (58-38) they would not relinquish.
The Lions cut the deficit to 11 points (58-47) with 13:02 left in the game after Kevin Haynes hit a pair of foul shots but that was as close as the Lions would get. The Lancers would lead by as many as 21 points on two occasions down the stretch before winning, 88-70.
The Lions will open South Atlantic Conference play by hosting Lincoln Memorial University on Wednesday night. Tip-off in Stanford Arena is slated for 8 p.m.
