MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' downed Pfeiffer University 111-92, Saturday evening in Stanford Arena. Carter Wright, Jalen Witherspoon, and Isaiah Cuthbertson recorded career highs in points in the victory. Mars Hill improved to 1-5 on the year while the Falcons fell to 2-4 overall.
Wright scored 33 followed by Witherspoon with 28 and Cuthbertson with 19 points. Cuthbertson also recorded his career high 16 rebounds to account for a double-double in the win. Wright hit five 3-pointers and tallied six assists. Devonte Williams came off the bench to score 14 points and dish out a career high nine assists. As a team, MHU recorded season highs in points scored, field goals made (35), field goal percentage (.565), free throws made (33), free throw percentage (.846) and blocked shots (3).
Mike Smith led all scorers with 35 points to pace Pfeiffer. A.J. Clark followed with 15 points while Armin Omanovic recorded a double-double with 10 points and the same number of rebounds.
Pfeiffer came out of the gates on fire scoring the games' first eight points. The Falcons took their largest lead of the contest with 16:06 left in the first half after A.J. Clark hit a 3-pointer. The Lions settled down and went on a 22-7 run to take a 25-22 lead at the 11:02 mark they would not relinquish after Witherspoon sank a shot from behind the arc. MHU closed out the first frame outscoring the Falcons, 33-20 to go into the locker room at halftime ahead by 16 (58-42).
Pfeiffer fought back in the second half chipping away at the Lions lead to come within four points (75-71) with 9:05 left in regulation. Again, the Lions had an answer for the Falcons comeback attempt going on a 25-12 run over the next seven minutes to lead by 17 (100-83) after Wright nailed a shot at the free throw line. Pfeiffer was forced to foul in the final minutes but MHU connected on 9-10 shots at the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
Mars Hill will return to action on Dec. 7, when they host SAC rival Wingate University. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
