CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mars Hill lost to Queens 82-73 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on the road Saturday evening. Devonte Williams tallied 25 points in the contest.
Williams hit five 3-pointers, had six rebounds and three assists in the loss. Carter Wright added 15 points while Isaiah Cuthbertson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. The performance was Cuthbertson's fourth double-double in scoring and rebounding on the year. MHU did not shoot well connecting on only 35.1% (26-74) from the floor and 55.6% (10-18) from the foul line.
Jarrett Stokes led Queens with 23 points while Nkosi Ali notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Joby Glymph added 17 points in the win. The Royals out rebounded the Lions 60-51, scored 44 points in the paint and tallied 18 second chance points.
Josh Clyburn hit a shot in the lane 16 seconds into the contest and the Royals would never trail again. Cuthbertson hit a layup at the 17:56 mark to score the Lions first basket but Queens answered scoring seven unanswered points to lead 12-2 with 15:14 on the clock after David Mason hit a shot in the paint. The Lions fought hard in the remaining 15 minutes of the first frame and trimmed the deficit to four points (38-34) with 1:17 left in the first half after Williams hit a jumper. Joby Glymph went 1-2 at the foul line with nine seconds remaining in the opening period to send the teams into the locker room with the Royals leading 39-34.
The second half played out much like the first. Queens found a way to hold off every significant run the Lions attempted. After leading by 12 points (68-56) with seven minutes left in the game, MHU outscored the Royals 12-3 over the next three minutes to trim the Royals advantage to just three points (71-68) after Williams nailed a 3-pointer. Unfortunately for the Lions, Queens answered by scoring seven unanswered points to extend their lead back to 10 points after Stokes converted an old-fashioned 3-point play with 1:17 left in the contest. That run sealed the win for the Royals. A layup by Wright cut the lead to seven points but that was close as the Lions would get.
The Lions will play at Carson-Newman on Wednesday, January 8. Tip-off in Holt Fieldhouse is set for 8 p.m.
