Williams, Wright Lead Lions to Victory

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill men's basketball team had two players finish with over 20 points as they defeated Queens 83-78 in South Atlantic Conference action in Stanford Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Mars Hill improves to 5-17 on the season and 3-14 in league play. Queens falls to 11-10 in the season and 9-8 in the conference.
Devonte Williams posted a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Carter Wright scored 22 points, with Isaiah Cuthbertson adding 19.
Queens was led by Josh Clyburn's 14 points. Jared Hendryx scored 13 points, with Jarrett Stokes and Brent Evans finishing with 11 points each.
After an opening four minutes that featured four ties and no larger than a two point advantage, Mars Hill held a 20-17 lead at the under-12 media timeout and opened up a seven point lead, 30-23, with 9:14 to play in the half. Queens went on a 10-2 run, taking a 33-32 lead on a David Mason layup with 4:35 to play. Queens took a 44-42 lead into halftime.
Mars Hill knotted the game at 48 after an Isaiah Cuthbertson layup with 16:57 remaining. The Royals pulled back ahead, leading by as many as four points before Mars Hill retook the lead, 57-55, following a Williams layup with 13:45 to play. The Royals and Lions were tied twice over the next three minutes before Mars Hill opened up a 64-59 lead with just over 10 minutes to play. Queens charged back, tying the game at 65 on a Clyburn layup. Wright gave Mars Hill the lead for good, sinking a 3-pointer with 6:30 to play. Queens got to within a point, 68-67, on a Clyburn dunk with 6:02 to play, but the Lions went on an 11-4 run to put the game away.
Mars Hill hits the road on Monday, traveling to Anderson to play a rescheduled contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
