Men's Basketball Falls to Newberry
The Mars Hill men’s basketball team lost 121-75 to Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action in Stanford Arena on Saturday.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team lost 121-75 to Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action in Stanford Arena on Saturday. Newberry improves to 17-7 overall and 13-7 in league play, while Mars Hill falls to 6-19 overall and 4-16 in the league.
Mars Hill was led by Carter Wright's 12 points, with Devonte Williams adding 11 points. Isaiah Cuthbertson pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Lions. Fourteen players saw action for Mars Hill.
Newberry was led by Demarkus Smith's 20 points. Dondray Walker scored 19 points, Xavier Holmes scored 17 points, Vincent Hicklin added 14 points with Brandon Taylor contributing 12 points. Hicklin pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
The Wolves jumped out to a 13-4 lead just under three minutes into the half before the Lions pulled to within seven, 25-18, with 13:27 to play following a Devonte Williams layup. Newberry extended their lead to 38-26 with just under five minutes to play in the half before going on a 22-10 run to close out the half with a 60-36 halftime lead.
The Wolves pushed their lead to 31, 71-40, with 18:06 to play in the game. Mars Hill pulled to within 27, 83-56, with 10:39 to play in the game, but Newberry led by as many as 48 points and no fewer than 34 en route to the victory.
Mars Hill travels to Brevard for their final road game of the season on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
