Winthrop Tops Mars Hill in Exhibition Contest

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop used a 26-9 run in the opening half to pull away from Mars Hill as the NCAA Division I Eagles defeated the Lions 96-51 in an exhibition contest Tuesday night at Winthrop Coliseum.
Patrick Monroe led Mars Hill with 17 points, followed by Kevin Haynes with nine points. Isaiah Cuthbertson pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Lions.
Keon Moore scored 17 points to lead Winthrop, with Keon Johnson adding 14 points and Derek Henry with nine. Tevin Prescott and Xavier Cooks each had 10 rebounds.
After Winthrop pulled out to a 7-0 lead, Mars Hill cut the deficit to five, 15-10, with 13:12 to play in the opening half. The Eagles extended their lead to 10 points before Mars Hill cut the advantage in half, 24-19, as Winthrop called a time out with 8:49 remaining. A pair of Moore free throws began a 26-9 run as Winthrop held a 50-28 lead at halftime. Following a Duby Okeke dunk that gave the hosts a 25 point lead with 16:44 to play, Mars Hill pulled to within 19, 59-40, with 10:39 to play. It was as close as Mars Hill would get the rest of the game as they were outscored 37-11 to end the game.
Mars Hill returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, traveling to Coker for a 4 p.m. start.
