Scruggs Records 400th Career Win in 90-76 victory over Pfeiffer

MARS HILL, N.C. – Mars Hill head coach Rick Scruggs recorded his 400th career win as the Lions men's basketball team defeated Pfeiffer 90-76 Saturday evening in Stanford Arena. Mars Hill and the Falcons took their season records to 2-2 overall.
Patrick Monroe led all scorers with 24 points as he hit six shots from behind the arc. He also tallied seven rebounds. Tyree Griffin and Justin Yeargin followed with 17 points apiece. Griffin added seven blocks, three steals and four boards. Jalen Witherspoon recorded seven points, a team high eight rebounds and two steals. The Lions scored 10 fast break points. As a team, MHU connected on 51.6% (33-64) of their shots from the floor and 41.2% (14-34) of the 3-point attempts.
Mike Smith and AJ Clark led the Falcons scoring 22 and 21 points in the contest, respectively. Andrew Guerrero added 18 points and eight rebounds. Pfeiffer hit 43.9% of their field goals, and 75% of their foul shots. Pfeiffer also won the battle of the boards, 44-30.
Pfeiffer jumped out to a six-point (9-3) lead after Clark hit a layup. MHU answered outscoring the Falcons 52-27 for the remainder of the second half to lead 55-36 at the intermission.
Pfeiffer cut the deficit to six points on two occasions in the second half but that was close as the Falcons would get. Mars Hill cruised down the stretch to the 14-point victory.
Mars Hill will open South Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday, November 24 at Anderson. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
