Men's Golf Looks to Continue Strong Season at SAC Championship
The SAC Championship begins Sunday in Marvin, N.C.
MARS HILL, N.C.- The Mars Hill men's golf team looks to keep their strong 2014-15 season going at the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Championship held at the Firethorn Country Club in Marvin, N.C. beginning on Sunday.
Chevy Hartzog leads the Lions with a 73.19 scoring average and is ranked No. 61 in the Golfstat.com NCAA Division II Head-to-Head rankings. Hartzog was the winner of the Echo Farms Intercollegiate and finished in the top five at the Etowah Intercollegiate (t-5th), Tusculum Fall Classic (t-3rd) and Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate (3rd). His 67 in the second round of the Tusculum Fall Classic is the lowest by any MHU golfer this season.
Adam Lumley is second on the team with a 74.40 scoring average. Lumley shot his season-best round of 69 in the second round of the Echo Farms Intercollegiate where he tied for second place.
After joining the team in January, Filip Andersson has one top five finish and two top ten finishes in five tournaments to earn 2015 SAC Freshman of the Year honors. Anderssson's 69 in the second round of the Tusculum Invitational is his season-best and his best tournament finish is a tie for third place in the 54-hole Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate.
Nick Caruso is fourth on the team with an average score of 76.27. Caruso finished in ninth place at the Echo Farms Intercollegiate. Antonio Douat posted a 76.50 average and had a season-best round of 71 in the second round of the Echo Farms Intercollegiate where he tied for second place. In five tournaments this spring, Luke Grogan has posted an average score of 76.80.
The Lions have two teams wins this year, picking up their first win at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate on Oct. 6-7 and their second win of the campaign at the Echo Farms Intercollegiate on Feb. 28-March 1.
The South Atlantic Conference Championship begins at 8:30 a.m. Sunday with second round action scheduled for Monday before concluding on Tuesday. Carson-Newman is the defending event champion.
