Lacrosse Tops Catawba
MARS HILL, N.C. - Mars Hill used a big second quarter to pull away from visiting Catawba and posted a 16-10 victory in Deep South Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday night at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The 12th-ranked Lions improve to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the DSC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 8-2 and 3-2.
The Lions never trailed after scoring the opening two goals of
the game. A goal by Freddie Turcio got the Indians within 3-2 at
the horn of the first quarter, but the Lions ripped off the next 10
goals to take control.
Mars Hill had six unanswered tallied in the second quarter to go up
9-2 at the break. T.J. Cowx and Zach Tomkinson each scored two of
those goals. Cowx closed the surge with three consecutive goals in
the third quarter before Cory Losselyong edge the run with 4:18
left.
Catawba made a late run. Down 14-4, the Indians scored five
straight to get within 14-9 on Turcio's second goals with 2:28
remaining. Jimmy McBride had two goals down the stretch for the
Lions.
Cowx finished with six goals for the Lions. McBride followed with
three tallies.Braden Artem led Catawba with two goals and three
assists. Turcio and Tom Cullop each had two goals and one
helper.
Mars Hill held a 50-37 edge in shots and won 15 of 26 face-offs.
Dylan Price stopped 11 shots for the Lions. Pete Wesselman made 13
saves for the Indians.
MHC will host Wingate University on March 31. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
