Lions Fall to #8 Seton Hill
MARS HILL, N.C.-The Mars Hill lacrosse team fell to eighth-ranked Seton Hill 14-9 Saturday afternoon in Meares Stadium.
The Griffins jumped out to an 8-1 lead with 10:29 to play in the second quarter, which proved too much for the Lions to overcome. James Delaney paced Seton Hill with three goals, while Taylor Mansfield, Erik Hultgren and Marc Piche added two-apiece. Jimmy McBride scored four goals for MHC, while Kile Garrett added two goals and two assists for a four-point night. Mars Hill fell to 3-1 overall. Seton Hill is now 2-1 on the season.
Zach Tomkinson added two goals for MHC. Ryan Herrmann notched a team-high eight ground balls and won 14-of-20 face-offs. Patrick McMahon made 14 saves while playing the full 60 minutes.
Dan Lefebrve notched a four-point night for Seton Hill with a goal and three assists. Jimmy Cogley led the Griffins with five ground balls. Chris Ilse earned the victory in net with nine saves. Seton Hill outshot the Lions 39-37.
Lefebrve got Seton Hill on the board at the 10:59 mark of the first quarter. McBride answered to tie the score at the 8:08 mark before the Griffins rattled off seven unanswered goals. Hultgren, Cogley, Delaney and Mansfield scored to give Seton Hill a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. The Griffins held a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal in the period.
Delaney, Mansfield and Hultgren opened the second quarter with three straight goals to make the score 8-1 with 10:29 to play. The Lions came back with three unanswered goals of their own, with two coming from McBride, before Piche scored to make the score 9-4 at the half.
Four straight Griffin goals to open the third quarter gave SHU a 13-4 lead. McBride scored a shorthanded goal with 2:42 to play in the stanza to cut the Lions deficit to eight.
The Lions scored four straight goals to open the fourth quarter. Garrett scored a pair of goals on the man-advantage, with Dan Applebaum picking up the assists on each goal. McBride and Tomkinson added tallies of their own to cut the score to 13-9 with 6:59 to play. Seton Hill shut the door and added a late tally by Piche for the final margin.
Mars Hill will host Ohio Dominican this Tuesday, Mar. 2 at 7:00
p.m. in Meares Stadium.
