Lions Top Penguins in Overtime
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' lacrosse team defeated Dominican University (Calif.), 10-9 in overtime Tuesday night in a steady, cold rain, in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The Lions improved to 4-1 while the Penguins fell to 1-2 on the season.
Anthony Malcolm scored the game winner off a pass from Zach Tomkinson with 1:28 left in the first extra period to propel the Lions to victory.
Kile Garrett and Malcolm led MHC with three goals apiece. Tomkinson added two goals and the same number of assists. Will Scott and Jimmy McBride added two assists each in the win. Patrick McMahon played all 62:25 in goal for MHC and made 14 saves.
Dalton Copeland came off the bench to lead the Penguins with three goals and one assist. Cody Bernstein and Jake Fritz recorded two goals apiece in the loss. Sean Donohue played the entire contest in goal for Dominican and also made 14 saves.
The score was knotted at 3-all after the first quarter. Jimmy McBride scored a goal and provided Kile Garrett with an assist in the first frame. Jake Fritz scored two of the Penguins three opening goals of the contest.
The second quarter mirrored the first as each team posted three goals to send the teams into the locker room at halftime with a 6-6 tie. Garrett added another goal in the second frame to give him two first half scores. Anthony Malcolm also recorded two goals in the first half of play. MHC had 22 grounds balls in the first half as opposed to the Penguins who obtained 12. MHC won 9-14 first half face-offs.
The Lions took an 8-7 lead after three periods of play out scoring the Penguins, 2-1 in the third quarter. Kile Garrett gave MHC a 7-6 lead at the 11:55 mark on a pass from Will Scott. After Dalton Copeland tied the game at 7-all two minutes later, Scott found the net on an assist from Jimmy McBride with 19 ticks left in the third stanza.
Dominican outscored the Lions, 2-1 in the final period of regulation to send the game into overtime. Dalton Copeland scored an unassisted goal with 50 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 9-9.
MHC outshot the Penguins, 35-30. The Lions won 15-23 face-offs and won the ground ball battle, 43-23.
Mars Hill will host Lake Erie on Friday, March 8. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
