Lacrosse Wins at Shorter
ROME, Ga. - The Lions' lacrosse team defeated Shorter University on the road, 16-8. Mars Hill improved to 5-2 on the season while Shorter fell to 2-5 on the year.
Kile Garrett and Jimmy McBride led MHC offensively scoring four goals apiece. Garrett added three assists. Will Scott and Jamie Raezer scored two goals each while Anthony Malcolm recorded one goal and three assists in the win. Patrick McMahon played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lions and made five saves.
Andrew King, Matt Kristiansen and Benjamin Janes scored two goals each to pace the Hawks. J.R. Willers also played the entire game in the net for Shorter and made 18 saves.
MHC outshot the Hawks, 51-18. The Lions won the ground ball battle, 35-33 and were 2-6 on extra-man opportunities. Each team won 13 face-offs.
Shorter jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter. The Lions fought back out scoring the Hawks, 4-1 in the second frame to send the teams into the locker room at halftime with Mars Hill leading 6-5.
After Shorter took a 7-6 lead at the 13:04 mark of the third quarter, the Lions scored four unanswered goals to seal the win. Kevin Eskridge notched the match winner with 8:30 left in the third period off a pass from Garrett. Shorter was able to score one final goal before MHC added six unanswered to make the final tally, 16-8 in favor of the visitors. The Lions won the third quarter 6-3 and then shut out the Hawks in the final period, 4-0.
The Lions will host Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday, March 17. Game time is set for a 1 p.m. start.
