McBride leads the Lions to victory
HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Jimmy McBride scored with 14 seconds left in regulation to lift Mars Hill to a 15-14 victory over Saint Leo University Sunday afternoon in a neutral site contest played in Hilton Head, S.C. The game winning goal was assisted by Tanner Leach.
McBride set season highs for goals scored and points in a single game in the win. He recorded seven goals and nine points in the contest as well as a pair of assists. Along with notching the game winner, McBride tied the contest at 15-all with just over a minute (1:04) left to play.
Will Scott followed McBride with three goals and two assists. Kile Garrett added one goal and a team high three assists while Anthony Malcolm had a goal and two assists. Patrick McMahon played 59 minutes in goal and made 11 saves.
George Proechel led Saint Leo with six goals and one assist. Chris Caiazza followed with three goals and two assists. Dave Moore played all 60 minutes in goal for SLU and made 15 saves.
MHC outshot Saint Leo 42-35. SLU won the ground ball battle, 20-18 while Mars Hill won 18-29 face-offs. Saint Leo was 5-8 on extra-man opportunities. MHC was 1-6. There were 20 penalties assessed in the contest.
Mars Hill jumped out to a 4-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Saint Leo bounced back outscoring MHC 4-3 in the second frame to send the teams into the locker rooms at the intermission with MHC holding a 7-5 advantage.
Saint Leo won the third stanza 5-3 to knot the contest at 10-all with one quarter left to play. Thanks to McBride, who scored three of his seven goals and tallied one of his two assists in the last quarter, MHC outscored Saint Leo 5-4 in the fourth quarter to win by a single goal (15-14). McBride accounted for four of the Lions five scores in the final quarter.
Mars Hill improved to 10-3 on the season while Saint Leo fell to 8-6 on the year.
Mars Hill will play Rollins College on April 28. The game will be played in Charlotte, N.C. This game will end the 2013 season for the Lions.
