Lacrosse Beats Catawba
The Lions overcame an early deficit to defeat Catawba, 15-7 in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action Sunday afternoon in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions overcame an early deficit to defeat Catawba, 15-7 in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. The Indians fell to 1-3 on the season, 0-1 in the league.
Anthony Malcom led MHU with five goals and two assists followed by Ryan Sage with four goals and two assists. Jimmy McBride added three goals and four assists while Saxon Weil tallied three scores in the win. Jack Grinewich played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lions and made 13 saves facing 30 shots, 20 on goal.
Connor Kennedy led Catawba with three goals. Ryan Applegate and Mikey McNeil combined for 11 saves in goal for the Indians.
The teams scored three goals apiece in the first quarter before Catawba took a 6-3 advantage with 10:41 left in the second quarter after Kennedy scored an unassisted goal. The Lions answered scoring 10 unanswered goals to lead 13-6 with 14:12 remaining in regulation after Malcom found the back of the net on a McBride pass. The Lions would go on to outscore Catawba 12-1 in the run to make the final tally 15-7 in favor of the hosts. Some impressive numbers from the 12-1 run included four goals and two assists by Malcom; three goals and the same number of assists from McBride; and two goals and a pair of assists from Sage.
The Lions outshot Catawba, 35-30. Catawba won 15-26 face-offs while MHU won the ground ball battle, 29-24. Neither team capitalized on extra-man opportunities. Mars Hill was 0-2 while Catawba was 0-4.
Mars Hill will host Queens on Saturday, March 7. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
