Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Day With Victory Over Adams State
Lions win 15-5 in season finale
MARS HILL, N.C.- The Mars Hill lacrosse team used a five-goal third quarter to pull away from Adams State in a 15-5 victory on Senior Day at Meares Stadium and Ammons Family Athletic Center on Sunday. Mars Hill finishes the season with a 10-6 record while Adams State falls to 3-11.
Jimmy McBride led the Lions with six goals, followed by Ryan Sage with two goals. Anthony Malcom, Saxon Weil, Hunter Maggs, Brian Pieklik, Tanner Leach, Dima Ferriera and Alex Lipsky each scored one goal. Sage had a game-high four assists. Adams State was led by Jamison Bobo with two goals, with John Beedle, Seth Stowell and Tanner Jones each scoring one goal.
Beedle gave the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead at the 10:32 mark before Pieklik tied the contest 28 seconds later. Mars Hill led 3-1 before the teams traded goals in the final 14 seconds to give the hosts a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.
McBride gave Mars Hill a 5-2 lead with 7:40 to go in the half. Bobo found the back of the net with 4:30 to go to cut the Lion lead to two. The Grizzlies had a man-up opportunity with as Jack Grinewich was called for an illegal body check at the 4:15 mark, but Leach caused a turnover in the defensive zone and went the distance for his first goal of the season. Mars Hill led 6-3 at halftime.
Malcom began the five goal charge for the Lions in the third period as he gave the hosts a 7-3 lead just over two minutes into the frame. The Lions scored at the 7:31 mark (McBride), 5:37 point (Lipsky) 4:59 (McBride) and with 15 seconds remaining (Sage) for an 11-3 lead after three quarters.
A Sage goal with 8:43 to play gave the Lions a 13-3 lead. Bobo and Stowell brought the Grizzlies to within eight, 13-5, but McBride found the back of the net two more times for the game's final score.
Mars Hill outshot Adams State 41-32. Grinewich made nine saves, with Ryan Kearney making one save in just under two minutes of action. Alec Hamlin made eight saves for Adams State. The Lions were 2-for-three in extra-man opportunities, while Adams State failed to capitalize on four extra-man chances.
Prior to the game Malcolm, Kevin Sherry, Leach, McBride, Sage, Pieklik, Weil, Yannie Reynecke, Grinewich and Frank Riffe were honored during Senior Day festivities.
