Lacrosse Falls to University of Indianapolis
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill Lions lacrosse team dropped a non-conference matchup with the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, February 20.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill Lions lacrosse team dropped a non-conference matchup with the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, February 20. The Greyhounds were able to pick up the win with a 12-9 decision. MHU is now 0-2 on the season and UI improves to 1-0.
Nathan Stewart led Mars Hill with four goals and four groundballs. A.J. Seip chipped in two goals and an assist in the losing effort. Mike McKee was able to collect a team-high nine groundballs and force three turnovers.
The Greyhounds outshot Mars Hill 42-28, but the Lions controlled the grounders with a margin of 28-20. The Lions were a combined 15-24 on the faceoff and forced 13 turnovers, however, they committed a season-high 20.
Ryan Kearney played all 60 minutes in goal and tallied 11 saves on the afternoon.
The first quarter was a high scoring affair was the two teams traded the initial four goals. Seip put the home team ahead 1-0 with a goal just 54 seconds into the match. With the score tied at 2-all, UI took two of the next three goals to push ahead 4-3 after one.
Mars Hill could not muster much offense over the next 15 minutes, managing only a single goal on four shots and Indianapolis went to the break with a 7-4 lead.
The two teams were evenly matched throughout the second half, scoring five goals each, but it did not fare well with the Lions as they could not overcome the three-goal halftime deficit. Mars Hill had many chances to cut into the lead, but for every goal scored, Indy had an answer until the final horn.
The Lions will return to action on Friday, February 26 as they head to Lakeland, Fla. to take on Florida Southern. First faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
