Lions Lacrosse Falls to Catawba
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill lacrosse team dropped a 17-6 decision to the visiting Catawba Indians on Saturday, March 19 at Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill lacrosse team dropped a 17-6 decision to the visiting Catawba Indians on Saturday, March 19 at Meares Stadium. The Lions fall to 0-7 overall and 0-3 within the South Atlantic Conference while the Indians improve to 2-4 and 2-1.
A.J. Seip led the charge for the Lions, connecting on two scores and grabbing a ground ball. Nathan Stewart posted a goal and a team-high four ground balls. Ryan Kearney played the entire contest between the pipes, tallying nine saves and also grabbing four grounders. Asyck Schildt and Josh Bryers added three ground balls each and Bryers also scored a goal.
The first period was very competitive with each team adding three goals in alternating fashion. The final goal of the period came from the cage of Seip with one second remaining to give the Lions momentum heading into the second period.
However, MHU could not capitalize on the shift in offense and Catawba stretched out to a four goal lead (8-4) heading into the intermission. Mars Hill was able to score the first goal of the second half to cut the deficit to 8-5, but CC scored eight unanswered goals throughout the remaining minutes of the third on into the final stanza to sit comfortably ahead 16-5 with just under three minutes to play in the contest.
Chase Pretti-Pearsall added a late goal for the Lions and Kelvin Uba found the back of the net for the second time in the game for the Indians to close out the scoring and give Catawba the win.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, March 26 as they travel to Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
