Mars Hill claws to OT win over LMU
Lions score three unanswered to win fourth straight.
HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (4-2, 1-0 SAC) defeated Lincoln Memorial (2-3, 0-1 SAC) by a score of 14-13 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
With less than a minute to play, the Lions found themselves down 13-11. Sam Arendt's hat-trick tally cut the deficit to one with 57 seconds remaining. With less than 20 seconds left, Cole Ross scored his second of the contest, ultimately forcing overtime.
Just 34 seconds into the extra period, Ross capped off his hat-trick and clinched the Lions' fourth straight win and first within the South Atlantic Conference.
In as evenly played a game as there can be, the teams matched each other's scoring output all throughout the contest. Arendt, Josh McCallion, and Brandon Woodward scored the Lions' three first quarter goals with Arendt and Ross each picking up an assist in the frame.
In the second, the teams each scored three apiece once again. Arendt and Woodward scored their second of the game while Ben Hokenson got in on the action. Shane Hecht was credited with the assist on Arendt's second, recording his first point of the season.
For the third straight frame, the teams netted three apiece in the third. McCallion was joined by Caleb Nelson and Lucas Kight. Austin Stroud picked up an assist on Nelson's marker.
Ross struck twice in the fourth while Nelson and Arendt scored the other two Mars Hill goals.
Ross led the Lions with five points (3g, 2a) followed by four from Arendt (3g, 1a). The trio of Woodward, Nelson, and McCallion each scored two goals apiece.
Hecht stopped 12 shots for his fourth win of the season.
The Lions square off against Wingate on Saturday, March 8 on the road at 3 p.m.
