MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (6-5-1) defeated Shaw (4-7-1) by a score of 2-1 in non-conference play Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
Sebastian Bertilsson opened the scoring just 1:47 into the contest for his sixth of the season. Taking a crossing pass from Sam Roe, Bertilsson tucked it behind Theo Delaleu to put Mars Hill up 1-0 less than two minutes into the match. With less than 20 minutes remaining in the first half, Oscar Mitchell would net the eventual game-winning goal, scoring his second goal of the season off of a pass from Carlo Pere.
Shaw would cut the deficit to one in the second half with a goal from Thiago Sooma. Fifteen minutes into second frame, Sooma launched the ball past the Mars Hill goalkeeper Brian Salzman to put the Bears on the scoreboard. Despite being outshot 7-4 in the second half, the Lions were able to stop the Shaw attack and preserve the 2-1 win.
Moritz Lotzen had a game-high four shot attempts followed by Bertilsson's three.
Delaleu made four saves in the contest while Salzman had two stops to pick up his sixth win of the year.
The Lions travel to Jefferson City on Wednesday, October 17th in a return to South Atlantic Conference play against the Carson-Newman Eagles. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
