Men's Tennis Falls to Newberry
Newberry used two wins in doubles play to defeat Mars Hill 5-4.
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry men's tennis team used two wins in doubles play to defeat Mars Hill 5-4 in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday. Mars Hill drops to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The Wolves won the top doubles match 9-7, with Markus Gattner and Alberto Ortiz evening the score thanks to an 8-6 victory in number two doubles. Angel Pizzaro and Jordan Monosky were 8-1 victors over Blake Covington and Carlos Suares Riesco to give the hosts a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Euquerio Guerrero was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Fernando Espana in number one singles, but Fernando Tous defeated Ortiz 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the second flight. Pizzaro defeated Sam Lee 6-3, 6-2 in number three singles. Riesco was a 7-6, 6-1 victor on the fourth court, followed by a Newberry victory on court five. Gattner won his second match of the day on court six, a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Marko Sekulic.
Mars Hill travels to Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday.
