Lions in First at NCAA Southeast Regional Championships
HICKORY, N.C.-- The Mars Hill men's track and field team is in first place after the opening night of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship, which was held Friday at Mortez Sports Complez/Irwin Belk Track.
HICKORY, N.C.-- The Mars Hill men's track and field team is in first place after the opening night of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship, which was held Friday at Mortez Sports Complez/Irwin Belk Track.
Mars Hill sits in first-place with 72 points overall. Alex Griggs and Derek Gibson paced the Lions with first-place finishes. Griggs took first in the 10000 Meter Run, while Gibson won the 3000 Meter Steeplechase. MHC leads second-place Anderson by 36 points. Six events have been scored thus far. The Lions are looking to defend the title the team won at last year's event.
Griggs won the 10000 Meter Run with a time of 32:40.06. That time was 15 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Brady Adcock and Daniel Jezioranski also placed in the top five of the event for MHC.
Gibson was clocked at 9:47.73 in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase. The time placed Gibson 13 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Cesar Reyes placed third in the event, while Carter Benge added a fifth-place finish.
Jaymz Fagaragan placed third in the Javelin Throw with a distance of 140'. Fagaragan also placed second in the Pole Vault with a vault of 11'-9.25".
Travis Riner added a fourth-place finish in the Hammer Throw and a fifth-place finish in the Javelin Throw.
The NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships conclude tomorrow at the Mortez Sports Complex/Irwin Belk Track.
