Lions Open Outdoor Season at L-R Invitational

HICKORY, N.C.- The Mars Hill men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2014 outdoor season on Saturday at the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational with six first-place finishes.
Jessica Viscusi won the women's 3000 Meter Steeplechase with a time of 11:58.20, which is 30 seconds away from the national qualifying mark. Alexis Montgomery won the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 58.80 and finished in second place in the 200 Meter Dash. In her first time competing in the event, Savannah Hulbert ran the third-fastest 100 Meter Hurdles time in school history, 16.41. Dawn Radford finished third in the 800 meters, lowering her personal best by three seconds with a time of 2:32.45. Dana Thompson broke the school record in the Hammer throw with a distance of 28.56 meters. Faith Trammel was the runner-up in the 5K, with Shelby Robinson setting a new personal record with a time of 20:21.71
Mars Hill swept the podium in the men's 5K as Alex Griggs won the race followed by Derek Gibson and Chase Shermer. Travis Riner was the victor in the Shotput and Discus. Jaymz Fagaragan set a new personal record in the Javelin with a throw of 46.39 meters. Tre'von Gee was the runner-up in the 110 Meter Hurdles. Marvin Fulwood finished in third place in the 200 Meter dash.
