Two Lions Earn All-Region Honors
NEW ORLEANS, La.-- Mars Hill's Alex Griggs and Cesar Reyes have been named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association Division II All-Southeast Region Team, which was announced Monday.
Griggs and Reyes were each honored for their performances in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championship, which was held Saturday at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte. Griggs qualified for the National Championship at the event, while Reyes turned in a 13th-place finish. The USTFCCA recognized over 400 student-athletes that earned All-Region honors after last weekend's Regional Championships. Student-athletes of member schools that finished in the top 25 individually at one of the eight regional sites earned the honor.
Griggs' fifth-place finish was the best by a South Atlantic Conference runner. His 32:00.6 time was good enough to make the national cut. Griggs had previously been named First Team All-SAC after finishing second at the conference championship. He was a three-time conference Runner of the Week this season. The freshman will compete in the National Championship in Joplin, Mo. on Nov. 17.
Reyes had also previously been named First Team All-SAC after his performance in the conference championship, where he finished third. Reyes finished second among Lion runners in all but one event this season. His 13th-place time at the Southeast Regionals was 32:33.2.
The USTFCCCA will release the final regular-season national coaches' rankings of the season in Division II on Wednesday. In addition, regional student-athletes and coaches of the year will be announced Wednesday.
