Men's Cross Country Opens Season With Win at Catawba Invitational
The Mars Hill men’s cross country claimed six of the top eight positions en route to a season-opening win at the Catawba Invitational on Friday afternoon.
SALISBURY, N.C.- The Mars Hill men's cross country claimed six of the top eight positions en route to a season-opening win at the Catawba Invitational on Friday afternoon.
Senior Derek Gibson claimed the win, crossing the line in 27:40. Reigning SAC Freshman of the Year Nathan Jones finished in second with junior Alex Griggs taking third place to cap the Lion sweep of the podium.
Junior Cesar Reyes finished in fifth place, followed by freshman Gil Gilreath in sixth and classmate Garrett Farrimond in eighth. Chase Shermer finished in ninth place to give Mars Hill seven of the top 10 finishers.
The Lions finished with a team score of 17, followed by Tusculum (64), Catawba (110), Warren Wilson (115), Winston-Salem State (172) and Chowan (184).
The Lions make the short trip to Greenville next Saturday for the Furman Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
