Lions Seek 18th-Consecutive SAC Title on Saturday
The Mars Hill men’s cross country team heads to the South Atlantic Conference Championships this Saturday in search of their 18th consecutive league crown Saturday in Salisbury, N.C.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's cross country team heads to the South Atlantic Conference Championships this Saturday in search of their 18th consecutive league crown. This year's championship meet will be held in Salisbury, N.C. hosted by Catawba College.
The Lions are no stranger to the Salisbury Community Park as they claimed the season-opening Catawba Invitational. Mars Hill has a pair of second place finishes and has finished no lower than seventh at any meet this season.
Alex Griggs enters the meet having been named AstroTurf SAC Runner of the Week three times this season. Griggs has finished no lower than fifth this season and has been the top Lion finisher in four of six meets. Griggs has finished in second place at the last two SAC Championship races.
Derek Gibson was the individual winner of the Catawba Invitational and was the winner of the first AstroTurf Runner of the Week award this season. Reigning SAC Freshman of the Year Nathan Jones has been among the Lions' top five along with Cesar Reyes. Chase Shermer was the highest finisher for the Lions at the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational on October 26. Griggs and Gibson earned First Team All-SAC honors in 2013, with Reyes earning Second Team accolades.
Mars Hill enters Saturday's meet as the second-ranked team in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
