Griggs Named USTFCCCA Southeast Region Athlete of the Year
Alex Griggs has been named the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Athlete of the Year for men's cross country
NEW ORLEANS - Alex Griggs can add another award to his fantastic senior season after being named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Region Athlete of the Year for men's cross country on Wednesday. He is the second runner in program history to receive the award.
Griggs claimed his third victory of the season and second consecutive after winning the Southeast Region Championship on Saturday in Wingate, N.C. Griggs broke the tape with a 10k time of 32:33.40. He won the South Atlantic Conference championship and was named Runner of the Year after finishing in first place with an 8k time of 25:08.20 on October 24.
Saturday was not the first time that Griggs has won at the Wingate Cross Country complex this season as he won the Bulldog Stampede on September 26 (25:42.70). At the Royals XC Challenge on October 9, Griggs set a new 8k school record with a time of 24:23.10.
Griggs and Mars Hill will travel to Joplin, Mo. next Saturday for the NCAA Championship.
