Mars Hill chosen 11th in preseason poll
The Mars Hill softball team was selected 11th in the South Atlantic Conference's preseason poll, as released Wednesday afternoon.
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Lincoln Memorial has been chosen first in the South Atlantic Conference's 2020 preseason softball poll, the league office announced today. The head coaches gave the Railsplitters 10 first place votes and a total of 131 points.
Carson-Newman grabbed the No. 2 slot with one first place vote and 115 points, while Anderson earned the final first place vote for a total of 100 points and earned the No. 3 spot. Lenoir-Rhyne placed fourth in the poll with 97 points and Wingate came in at No. 5 with 92 points. Coker landed at No. 6 with 87 points, followed by Newberry at No. 7 with 78 points. Queens' 72 points gave them the No. 8 spot and at No. 9 was Catawba with 45 points. Tusculum placed tenth with 38 points, Mars Hill came in at No. 11 with 37 points and UVa-Wise rounded out the poll with 32 points.
The South Atlantic Conference also announced its preseason All-South Atlantic Conference team. The first team outfield positions consisted of Carson-Newman's Abby Fiessinger, Mckenzie Barneycastle of Newberry and Wingate's Emma Swenson.
The first team infield was represented by Mary Claire Coyne of Wingate at first base, at second base was Ty-Kella Goins of Lincoln Memorial, at shortstop was Talon LaClair from Lenoir-Rhyne and at third base Hannah Davis from Newberry. Also earning first team honors was Lenoir-Rhyne's Kylee Leonhardt at catcher.
In the pitcher's circle, Courtney Pearson represented Queens and she was joined by Isabelle Mullen from Coker on the first team.
Kayson Boatner of Anderson was voted the first team designated player and Wingate's Aubrey Reep was voted the first team utility player.
The South Atlantic Conference softball season gets underway on Saturday, Feb. 1. The 2020 South Atlantic Conference Softball Championship will take place April 24-April 25 at Tusculum University's J.C. Red Edmonds Softball Field.
