Deal posts double-double for the Lions
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Taylor Deal tallied a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds as Mars Hill routed Assumption, 87-68, on the second day of the 2010 San Diego Surf 'N Slam Classic at Point Loma Nazarene University. The Lions improve to 7-2 and end Assumption's seven-game win streak. The Greyhounds fall to 8-2.
Deal was 10-14 from the floor. Brittini Young added 19 points for Mars Hill. Kristen Metcalf had 12 points on four three-point field goals. Jocelyn Williams chipped in eight rebounds.
Molly Griffiths led Assumption with a team-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Kelly Meredith had 16 points. Sabrina Siciliano recorded 10 rebounds.
Leading 29-28 with 5:44 remaining in the first half, the Lions went on an 8-1 run. Young had all eight of the points, including two shots from behind the arc, and Mars Hill led 44-37 at halftime.
Mars Hill opened the second half with a 28-9 spurt to put the game out of reach. A fastbreak layup by Deal gave the Lions a 72-46 upper hand with 11:19 left in the game.
The Lions converted 18 Greyhound turnovers into 21 points. Mars Hill outscored Assumption in the paint, 22-14.
Mars Hill was take on Ashland on Thursday in the final game for the Lions of the 2010 San Diego Surf 'N Slam Classic. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. EST.
