Women’s Basketball loses to Newberry
MARS HILL, N.C. - Mars Hill lost to Newberry 83-72 inside Stanford Arena. The Wolves improve to 12-7 overall, 7-4 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Lions fall to 13-6 overall, 6-5 in the league.
Helen McKinney scored 33 points for Newberry. Leeara Creet added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Taylor Deal pumped in 19 points and six rebounds for Mars Hill. Tyler Carlson had 14 points, and Jocelyn Williams had 12.
The Lions led by nine points at the midpoint of the first half. Two free throws by Kristen Metcalf made the score 23-14.
Metcalf hit a trey with 11 seconds left to give Mars Hill the upper hand, but Creet dribbled down the floor and drained a shot from behind the arc as time expired to give the Wolves a 35-34 advantage.
McKinney scored 20 of her points in the second half. She scored nine straight points for her team at one point to make the score 54-43 in favor of Newberry with 13:18 left in the game.
Mars Hill cut the deficit to four points at the 10:10 mark of the second half. A trey from Carlson made the score 59-55, but the Lions would get no closer.
Both teams recorded 38 rebounds, but the Wolves outrebounded the Lions on the offensive glass, 16-8. Mars Hill outscored Newberry in the paint, 30-22, but the Wolves converted 14 Mars Hill turnovers into 22 points.
The Lions will travel to Anderson on Saturday, February 5. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
