Women’s Basketball Wins at Carson-Newman
Tyler Carlson scores 23 points in the win
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Lions' women's basketball team won on the road at Carson-Newman Wednesday night, 87-78, in Holt Fieldhouse. Tyler Carlson led Mars Hill to the win scoring a game high 23 points. She added eight rebounds, five assists and four steals while playing 33 minutes in the contest.
Armeka Booker and Ansley Ricker followed Carlson's performance scoring 18 points and pulling down five rebounds apiece. Ricker hit four 3-pointers and had a couple of assists. Jackie Simon rounded out the double-digit scorers for MHC (9-6, 3-4 SAC) with 12 points.
Zoriah Williams led Carson-Newman (8-7, 2-5 SAC) with a double-double scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 boards. Shannon Depew added 14 points while Megan Hunter recorded 12 markers. The rebound battle was knotted at 38-all and the contest saw 10 ties and 11 lead changes.
The first half was closely played. C-N took their largest lead of seven points (12-5) in the first frame at the 14:05 mark after Zoriah Williams hit a layup. The Lions then went on a 18-9 run to take a 23-21 advantage with 6:23 left in the half after Carlson hit a jumper. MHC would enjoy a two-point (35-33) lead at the break.
The Eagles came out of the locker room and went on a 15-5 run to take their largest lead of the game (48-40) with 16:24 left in the contest after Nikki James connected on a pair of shots at the foul line. The Lions answered with a 16-5 run of their own to take a 56-53 lead with 11:38 left in regulation after Carlson hit a shot from behind the arc. Carlson scored seven of the 16 points during the run. Over the next eight minutes the game saw four ties and five lead changes before Ricker gave the Lions the lead for good with 3:47 left in the game by hitting what would later prove to be the winning 3-pointer. MHC would lead by as many as nine points (85-76) after Taylor Deal made a pair of free throws with 21 ticks left.
Mars Hill will host SAC rival Tusculum College Saturday afternoon in Stanford Arena. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
