Lions Complete Season Sweep of Coker
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team completed the season sweep of Coker College with a 71-65 victory on Saturday afternoon in Timberlake-Lawton Gym. Mars Hill won the first meeting on Dec. 14, 2013 in Stanford Arena by a 57-54 score.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Coker College with a 71-65 victory on Saturday afternoon in Timberlake-Lawton Gym. Mars Hill won the first meeting on Dec. 14 in Stanford Arena by a 57-54 score. Mars Hill improves to 5-15 and 4-13 in the South Atlantic Conference, while Coker falls to 10-10 overall and 8-8 in league play.
Ansley Ricker led the Lions with a game high 26 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Cadence Wilmoth added 13 points off the bench.
Kelley Godbout scored 15 points to lead the Cobras, while Tanesha Stenson scored 13 points and Hailey Yonn added 10 points.
After Ricker scored the first points of the contest on a pair of free throws 27 seconds in, Coker opened up a 12-7 lead just over six minutes into the game before Mars Hill tied the score at 14 on a Wilmoth layup with 10:18 remaining. Coker went on an 8-0 run to take a 22-14 lead with 7:34 remaining and held a 28-21 with 4:34 to go in the half. The Lions scored the final seven points of the first half to send both teams back to the locker rooms even at 28.
A Jessica Cohen layup gave Coker a 30-28 lead just over a minute into the second half before Mars Hill went on a 12-2 run for a 40-32 lead with just over 13 minutes to play. Mars Hill held a 43-34 lead with 12:36 to play before Coker took a 48-47 lead with 8:22 to go. The Lions and Cobras swapped the five times and were tied five times before Brittany Baker sank a 3-pointer to give Mars Hill a 66-63 lead with 42 seconds to play. After Coker's Jessica Cohen missed a shot on the Cobras' next possession, Autumn Ward pulled down the rebound and was fouled. Ward made one of her two free throws for a 67-63 lead. Stenson made a layup with 17 seconds left to cut the Mars Hill lead to 67-65, but Baker was fouled on the next Lion possession and made both free throws. Coker missed a 3-pointer on their next possession, with Ricker pulling down the rebound and sinking her final free throw attempts of the game to seal the win.
Mars Hill travels to Anderson on Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. contest.
